Malinovsky, Marshal Rodion
1898–1967
   Malinovsky was commanding an army at Odessa at the start of Barbarossa (June 1941) and in December 1941 was given command of the South-west Front. In December 1942 at Stalingrad, Malinovsky prevented MANSTEIN from freeing PAULUS’ encircled Sixth Army. From 1943 to 1944 Malinovsky was Commander first of the Southwest Front and then of the 3rd Ukrainian Front with which he cleared out the Donbass and west Ukraine. Later in 1944 he became Commander of the 2nd Ukrainian Front and, in conjunction with TOLBUKHIN, invaded Rumania, totally defeating the Germans, taking 200,000 prisoners and causing Rumania to defect to the Allies. Malinovsky continued on to Hungary and took Budapest in February 1945. In April 1945 he liberated Slovakia. Malinovsky then led the Soviet Armies in Manchuria in August.
